Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care Unit
Raising Malawi has supported the pediatric surgery program at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre since 2008. Our support has focused on improving clinical care and developing Malawian pediatric surgeons and clinical officers.
Raising Malawi recently expanded its work supporting pediatric surgery at QECH by launching a new project with the Malawian Ministry of Health to construct and help operate the country’s first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit (ICU). The unit will help the hospital provide more life-saving services for children, as the current ICU only has four beds for 1,300 patients per day.
The free-standing pediatric surgery and intensive care unit will include:
The unit will double the number of surgeries on children each year and will save lives with critical intensive care services.
The facility will also expand upon the previous work of long-term Raising Malawi partner Dr. Eric Borgstein to train new pediatric surgeons in Malawi. In a country where 50% of the population is under 15 years of age, it is critical to develop further pediatric health practitioners.
Donate now to help us build this much-needed pediatric surgery unit and change the course of a child’s life forever!
